Pataleshwer Temple

The Pataleshwer Temple is a hindu temple in the city of Hajipur Bihar India dedicated to lord shiv, it is located to jadhua road Hajipur. it is said to have been in existence since ancient  period and Lord Shiv is believed to be in form of Lingam here. apart from anthropomorphic  image of Shiv. The worship of  the Shiv linga originated from the famous hymn in the Atharva -veda Samhita Sung in praise of yupa stambha the sacrifical post. The lingam is a represented  of the hindu deity Shuva used for worship in temples 



                                                                                                                                      The pataleshwer temple has an intresting origin -King Siddharaj Solanki of the Solanki era was born at this site. In celebration, Maharani Minaldevi ordered that a well shouldbe dug at the spot for thirsty travelers. While digging the well, a Shiva Linga was unearthed, and therefore, the Pataleshwer temple was later built in the shape of a well.



It was aptly christened patal eshwer , which means 'lord under the ground ", the actual temple built in the 8th century AD lies 40 feet below the ground ,while the new structure on top has only  been recently added.  On many original stones used to build the temple , inscription showing different symbole on snakes (who adorn lord shiva's neck) are found.
